Australian Sea Lion Tour

Home to the famous Pinnacles desert, Cervantes is the perfect getaway for you and your family! White sandy beaches and turquoise waters full of beautiful marine life, makes Cervantes the perfect escape for anybody and everybody. There are so many activities in this beautiful place, but an outstanding one of our family favorites is the Lobster Shack Seal Tour. This magical tour will take you through the many islands around Cervantes to see one of the world’s rarest seals, the Australian Sea Lion.

Departing from the Lobster Shack, your skipper and crew will keep you entertained and well informed, as Cervantes is rich in history, dating back to 1844 with the Wreck of the Cervantes Whaling Brig.

Upon arrival at the Cervantes Islands, we head out to shore, as the Sea Lions begin to stir. It isn’t long before they are close to the boat putting on a show for their guests. The gentlest of underwater mammals, Sea Lions love to play, and entertain! You will find them showing off as they leap out of the water.

Did you know that Sea Lions are one of the world’s rarest species on earth? The Australian Sea Lion is only found in Western Australia and South Australia. These big guys can live for up to 20 years! You will mostly find them lazing around on the warm sandy beaches or rocks.

With a population estimated at about14,730 animals, Australian Sea Lions are an endangered species. These pinnipeds are specifically known for their abnormal breeding cycles! Our sea lion friends eat teleost fish, squid, cuttlefish, octopus, sharks, rock lobster (our mates), other small crustaceans and penguins. Australian sea lions live on the sandy beaches or on smooth rocks off the coast.

As well as viewing Seal Lions, on board you will have the unique experience of viewing the world-famous Pinnacles from the ocean and once you are back on land you should test your fishing skills and go fishing off the beach or jetty. Hangover Bay and Kangaroo Point are renowned fishing hotspots. You should also take the time to take a relaxing stroll past the different jetties. This is a particularly exciting attraction during the rock lobster fishing season (November to June). While you’re on board the skipper will pull his lobster pots in search of the ultimate catch, the Western Rock Lobster.

If all of this is still not enough for you, you can also check out the home of the oldest living fossils on the planet! The Stromatolites are estimated to be over 3,000 years old and can be viewed all year long from the Lake Thetis boardwalk.

For an unforgettable day bring along your hat, sunscreen and bathers (just in case you get the chance to hop in for a swim!).
